Chapter Seven

I felt a little weird for the rest of the day, as if nothing would ever be the same again. It was only natural, of course. I’d given Jamie an orgasm, and wholly unintentional or not, the memory would always exist between us. But it wasn’t as if we’d slept together. I’d massaged him in an effort to create a distraction, a situation which would never have existed in the civilian world. I could only hope it wouldn’t become a habit.

I shivered at the thought of Jamie running to find me every time he lost his temper and started to shift. I pictured myself absently stroking his erection and rolling my eyes as I stared at my fingernails while he messed his pants again. What had I done?

I’d probably saved his life, that’s what. Blinking away the thought, I tried to concentrate on my work, which involved creating an electronic database of the club’s membership records. It was hopelessly disorganized and kept me busy for the remainder of the day. When I finally looked up from the screen, I was startled to see two huge marquees had been erected off to one side of the lodge, between the approach road and the lake.

Of course. The other packs would need somewhere to eat and sleep. I’d no idea how many guests would be arriving at the lodge, but the end of the first day would see each pack’s contenders reduced to nine. So the day could begin with ten times as many, or twenty. Plus spectators. Sean had warned me the place would be busy after Thanksgiving. He wasn’t kidding. I was only sorry shifters didn’t celebrate the holiday. Aunt Deb had never made much of a fuss about it, preferring to pay tribute to seasonal events such as the solstices. We’d celebrated Midsummer, or Litha as she called it, by the Sugar River to the north of Newport. The pair of us had stayed up all night—which was only about six hours, feeding a small bonfire until dawn broke. I wondered if Sean’s people celebrated in the same way. I made a mental note to ask him as I saved, and then closed the database I’d built. Once that was done, I was free to observe the activities outside.

People milled around the freshly-erected marquees, carrying boxes of supplies and equipment. Most of them were men, but I spotted a few women amongst them. I’d no hope of counting the new arrivals. Maybe I’d get a better idea tomorrow, when the crowds and spectators gathered at the lakeside.

Sean, Grant, and Dale walked past, chatting. The huge windows blocked out all sound, but the brother’s expressions told me everything. Dale was angry, shaking his head at almost everything Sean said. Sean chopped his hand down, leaning in to emphasize his point, but Dale was having none of it. He refused to be convinced. Grant stood between them, putting down his palms in an attempt to pacify the pair. Sean wasn’t angry,
